Google DeepMind has officially unveiled Genie 4, a next-generation world model designed to simulate interactive environments purely through neural networks rather than dedicated physics engines. The release marks a major shift in generative artificial intelligence from text-based reasoning toward simulating physical laws and spatiotemporal continuity. According to Google DeepMind, Genie 4 expands beyond previous visual-only simulations by natively integrating dynamic background sound, music, and conversational speech into a single multimodal generation pipeline without separate post-processing.

The development builds on a progression that started with the two-dimensional video model Genie 1 in 2024, followed by Genie 2 and Genie 3, which expanded into three-dimensional spaces. While Genie 3, released in August 2025, supported silent one-minute interactive worlds navigated via keyboard inputs, Genie 4 enables direct real-time steering through natural language prompts. Under the hood, the architecture integrates Google Gemini models, where Gemini Omni sets visual appearances and physical behaviors while a Gemini inference model maintains causal consistency and spatiotemporal continuity across simulation frames. This allows users to alter viewpoints, shift weather, or introduce new characters on the fly using text instructions.

Simulated interactive environments serve as foundational data-generation infrastructure for training autonomous vehicles and physical robotics agents, enabling infinite repetitions of hazardous scenarios and edge cases that are impractical to test in the real world. By pairing synchronized visual frames with audio, Genie 4 offers an alternative to manual graphic asset pipelines and costly three-dimensional physics engine licenses, lowering synthetic data costs for embodied artificial intelligence. Google DeepMind is conducting a research preview with trusted testers and plans to roll out access via Project Genie to Google AI Ultra subscribers, followed by broader availability for partners using the Gemini API and Google AI Studio.
